Nelson Sexton

This is a summary interview about the origination of unturned, and about Nelson Sexton’s life during and before Unturned. This interview was viewed as the first part, the second part, and the third part. All things in this Q and A are in summary, and by no means all quotable.

Q: What inspired you to make Unturned?

A: I played a lot of DayZ whenever I was a bit younger, so I decided that I needed to make something like it.

Q: When did you start your development in Unturned?

A: Whenever I was 16.

Q: How did you learn to program?

A: I learned off the Internet.

Q: How did you get the name Unturned?

A: It means you haven’t turned into a zombie.

Q: Is it just you doing everything? Is anybody else helping?

A: I have a few friends that are doing community moderation… But design and program is completely done by me.

Q: Will you keep doing program and design by yourself?

A: Yes. Multiple people feels like it would slow down development.

Q: Did Unturned start in ROBLOX?

A: Yes, well, sort of. It started out as “Deadzone”.

Q: Will the game always stay free-to-play?

A: Yes, so that you can play with your friends in an easier way. It will always be free-to-play.

Q: Why is the map set to PEI?

A: I asked everybody what map should be made for the development, and everybody suggested that it should be located on Prince Edwards Island.

Q: Will there be better optimization updates?

A: Yes. I am working with models to decrease the amount of detail seen from far away.

Q: Will you make anymore new zombies?

A: I’m thinking about it. I just want to work on the artificial intelligence before anything else.

Q: What is your goal for Unturned?

A: I want to make it look better. Make higher detailed items. I want to make things more appealing.

Q: How do you feel about owning an extremely successful game?

A: It’s really exciting. I guess I don’t really understand how many people play it, because all I do is make it for a hobby. It’s like an everyday thing.

Q: Does your family know about your success?

A: Yes they do. In fact, we ate pizza whenever I found out the game was on the Green Light list on Steam.
